All About JFS

Jewish Family Services is a part of the Central Kentucky Jewish Federation. This agency addresses issues and concerns which affect the Jewish community in Central Kentucky by offering direct and indirect support services. The staff of JFS provides services in a manner sensitive to Jewish culture, values, and ideals. The principle of confidentiality is intrinsic in all agency functions.

Major services provided include case management, crisis intervention, assistance to older adults, processing requests for financial assistance, resettlement and acculturation of new Americans, assessment and referral of individuals with special needs, family life education, and advocacy for members of the Jewish community. You can reach JFS at jfs@jewishlexington.org

Family Life Education - Jewish Family Services provides workshops on different topics of concern to the Jewish family. Workshops that have been given so far include a series on Parenting, and how to deal with the difficult behaviors of small children, a series on Teen Self-Esteem, including one session on nutrition and exercise, and one specifically on body image and eating disorders. Also, JFS has also organized joint educational programs with Hadassah, the women's zionist organization. In 2000, JFS and Hadassah provided the preschool program, Al Galgalim, to the community. It was very successful and continued on in 2001. Other workshops offered have covered stress management, substance abuse, domestic violence, women's health issues, and internet safety.

The Leisure Club - is a group for Jewish people ages 65 and over. It provides opportunities for social and intellectual enjoyment for the senior population in Lexington. Leisure Club usually meets once a month at 12:00 pm. A favorite activity is to meet for lunch at new and exciting restaurants around town. Other activities have included a trip to the Louisville JCC, a lecture by a Russian poet, performances by the Louisville singers, a Hawaiian luau, the annual Hanukkah party, lectures, speakers, plays, baseball games and so much more!
